In a new interview with CNBC on Monday, August 5, Trump said he is unlikely to seek a third term in office.
When asked directly if he would run again after his current term ends, Trump responded, “No. Probably not.”
He then repeated, “Probably not,” with a laugh.
This is the clearest statement yet from Trump that he is not planning to challenge the US Constitution’s 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to two terms in office.
Trump acknowledges constitutional limit
Trump’s comment puts to rest months of speculation about whether he might try to find a way to remain in power beyond 2028.
Under the US Constitution, a president can only serve two terms. While Trump’s terms are non-consecutive, having served from 2017 to 2021 and returning in 2025, the legal cap remains.
To change this, Trump would need overwhelming support from Congress and state governments, a highly unlikely scenario.
He would require two-thirds of the House and Senate to agree, or a constitutional convention backed by two-thirds of state legislatures and ratified by three-fourths of the states.
Supporters had floated idea of third term
Some of Trump’s allies, such as far-right political commentator Steve Bannon, have pushed for the idea of a third term. Trump himself has often teased the idea in public statements, keeping supporters guessing.
However, in the CNBC interview, Trump admitted the thought still appeals to him.

Trump yet to endorse 2028 successor
As talk shifts to who might follow him, Trump has not endorsed a potential candidate for 2028. In February, he declined to back Vice President JD Vance when asked.
Vance has avoided questions about his own ambitions, saying he would rather focus on supporting Trump.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a recent Fox News interview, voiced support for Vance and urged him to enter the race in 2028.
With Trump stepping back from a possible third run, attention may now turn to the next generation of Republican leaders.
