Jobe Bellingham’s highly anticipated Bundesliga debut for Borussia Dortmund turned into a night of frustration and controversy after his parents reportedly attempted to confront head coach Niko Kovac.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who signed for Dortmund from Sunderland in a £32 million move this summer, was taken off at half-time in a chaotic 3-3 draw against St Pauli.

The substitution followed a poor first-half display in which Bellingham, who is the younger brother to Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham struggled to find his place, leading Kovac to make a tactical change.

However, the decision did not sit well with his father, Mark Bellingham, who also acts as his advisor.

According to Sky Germany, Mark voiced his displeasure directly to Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl, while he also sought out Kovac after the game to express his frustration.

Family frustration disrupts Dortmund flow

Dortmund had been in a comfortable position, leading 3-1 with minutes to play, but collapsed late on to draw 3-3.

The result compounded the club’s frustrations, with Jobe’s substitution adding a personal sting for the Bellingham family.

According to BILD, his father is believed to have criticised both the decision to substitute his son off and Dortmund’s inability to secure all three points.

The incident has sparked debate in Germany, with many questioning the role of family members in professional football.

While parents and advisors often act as close confidants for young players, their direct involvement in dressing room or technical matters is generally frowned upon.

For Dortmund, who lost the 2024 Champions League final, it added a layer of unwanted drama to what was already a difficult day as they dropped two crucial points in the Bundesliga opener.

Dortmund’s firm response to Bellingham’s

In response to the confrontation, sporting director Sebastian Kehl made it clear that the club will not tolerate similar incidents in the future.

Speaking to the media, Kehl said:

"We are all disappointed about the result yesterday. And still, the active area at our club remains reserved for players, coaches and officials, not families and advisors. This will not happen again. We have made this clear to all involved."

Despite the rocky start, Dortmund remain confident that Bellingham will play an important role in their campaign after joining this summer.

At just 19, the England international has shown great promise and is expected to be gradually integrated into Kovac’s system.

The midfielder will now need to refocus on training and prove his worth on the pitch to reclaim his place in the starting XI.

For Dortmund, the focus will shift to their upcoming Bundesliga fixtures, where they hope both the team and their new signing can put the drama behind them.

Bellingham loses cool with Mbappe

In another development, Jobe’s elder brother Jude Bellingham appeared to lose his cool with Real Madrid teammate Kylian Mbappe after they lost their sixth league game last season.

The game saw another dismal performance from Kylian Mbappé, who missed his second penalty in eight days and struggled to deliver for Los Blancos.
