Super Eagles legend Peter Rufai has been buried after a mass at the Catholic Church of Visitation in Lagos State on Friday morning, August 22.

The 1994 AFCON winner passed away at the age of after a prolonged illness on July 3 at his Lagos residence.

Rufai was the first Nigerian goalkeeper to play professional football outside the shores of Africa in 1987 with Lokeren.

The ex-international represented the Nigerian national team from the early 80s till the early 2000s, playing in two FIFA World Cups.

The Nigeria Football Federation affirmed that they supported the family of Peter Rufai.

In a post on X, NFF said a high-powered delegation was sent to the funeral mass of the Super Eagles legend. NFF wrote:

"At the funeral mass of Peter Rufai in Lagos, the NFF also offered financial support to his family.
"The delegation included Executive Committee Member Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi and Dr Ademola Olajide.
"We honour their service, celebrate their legacy, and extend our continued support to their families, according to Vanguard."

The Nigeria Football Federation informed the general public that financial support was extended to the family of former Super Eagles captain Christian Chukwu, per Punch.

"The Nigeria Football Federation stood in solidarity with two of our legends as they were laid to rest.
"In support of their burial rites of Christian Chukwu, the NFF provided financial assistance to his family and was represented by Executive Committee Member Chief George Aluo, Barrister Okey Obi, and Mr Chikelue Iloenyosi."

Nigerians are divided over the manner in which the Nigeria Football Federation supported the family of the late Peter Rufai.

Akanni claimed that the Lagos State Government donated the sum of N15 million to the family of Rufai.
