Kang-in Lee and Goncalo Ramos equalised for the European champions in the closing stages, which set up a dramatic 4-3 win on penalties.
According to UEFA, Ousmane Dembele was named the man of the match for his performance, which has raised eyebrows among fans.
Many social media users believe the French forward has sealed the race for the 2025 Ballon d'Or ahead of the ceremony on September 22, 2025.
Dembele was named among a raft of top current players earlier this month, with UEFA listing each of the nominees for the top football prize.
Amid speculation about the award, Legit.ng has looked at the updated Ballon d'Or top five rankings after PSG won the UEFA Super Cup.
Updated 2025 Ballon d'Or award rankings
1. Ousmane Dembele
Dembele has always been the overwhelming favourite to win the Ballon d'Or since Paris Saint-Germain won their first UEFA Champions League trophy in May this year.
The current happenings do not affect him, as the timeline for consideration was from August 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025, and the FIFA Club World Cup was the last major tournament that would affect this year's voting, as noted by beIN Sports.
2. Lamine Yamal
Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal, despite a brilliant season, is expected to finish behind the French international forward in the race for the most coveted individual award in world football.
He helped his club win three trophies - La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup - but did not participate in the Club World Cup, where PSG reached the final and lost out to Chelsea.
3. Raphinha
La Liga’s best player last season, Raphinha, has been overshadowed by the brilliance of his teenage teammate, but he has a strong push for a podium finish after the best season of his career.
The Brazilian play-maker was the top scorer and also provided the most assists in the Champions League last season, even though Dembele was named the overall best player.

4. Vitinha
PSG’s midfield dynamo was one of the nine players from the French club nominated for the Ballon d'Or this season and is expected to have a strong finish.
He missed his penalty in the UCL final, but was redeemed by his teammates.
5. Mohamed Salah
Salah, in the course of last season, was touted as the likely winner of the Ballon d'Or, but he faded after PSG eliminated Liverpool from the UEFA Champions League.
He could replicate his best-ever finish of fifth place again this year after helping the Reds claim a 20th Premier League title with matches to spare.
Predicted winners of 2025 Ballon d'Or award
Legit.ng also analysed Ballon d'Or predictions after France Football announced the nominees for the 2025 men's and women's categories.
PSG attacker Dembele is the favourite for the men's award, while Spain's Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas are the top two women.
