Arsenal, Chelsea, and Newcastle United were also linked with an interest in the Nigerian forward following an impressive loan spell at Galatasaray, but they opted for other forwards in the market.

Arsenal would end up signing Viktor Gyokeres, while Chelsea opted for Liam Delap and Joao Pedro to lead their attacks ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Why English clubs snubbed Osimhen

Osimhen has now sealed a permanent €75 million transfer to Galatasaray, where he spent last season on loan from Napoli.

Former England forward turned pundit Gary Lineker claimed several clubs were “nervous” about signing Osimhen this summer due to speculations about his character.

He said: “I hear through the grapevine that some clubs are a bit nervous because he sometimes goes missing for a few days.
“So apparently, there are slight concerns about his character in that regard.”

Speaking to The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer named Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, and Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak as the three strikers better than Osimhen.

Salah (29 goals), Isak (23 goals), and Haaland (22 goals) finished as the top three goal scorers in the Premier League last season, whereas Osimhen netted 27 league goals for Galatasaray.

Osimhen’s focus on Galatasaray success

For now, Osimhen remains focused on his new chapter at Galatasaray, where he aims to deliver another title-winning campaign and boost his reputation further in Europe.

A strong season in Turkey and the UEFA Champions League could yet reignite Premier League interest in the Nigerian forward.

While Shearer’s comments sparked debate among fans, many believe Osimhen’s pace and scoring instinct could still make him a success in England if a future move materialises in the future.
