FC Porto have been rocked by the death of another former player, a month after ex-forward Diogo Jota tragically passed away in a car accident.

Liverpool star Jota and his brother André Silva, both of whom were former players of Portuguese giants, passed away in a car accident on July 3, 2025.

The brothers died in Spain after their Lamborghini lost control after a tyre burst and caught fire on impact, killing both professional footballers.

Former Porto captain Jorge Costa died

Portuguese club FC Porto confirmed in an official statement that their former player, captain and football director Jorge Costa, has passed away at the age of 53.

The club added that the former player, who was born in the city and spent most of his career at Porto, died of cardiorespiratory arrest on Tuesday, August 5.

Portugal national team captain Cristiano led the tributes to one of the players who embodied Portuguese football during his career. Fans and football clubs flooded the comments section with tributes to Costa.

“Until forever, Jorge Costa,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram.

Jorge Costa’s career at Porto

According to Yahoo Sports, Costa spent the majority of his career at FC Porto, where he played for 25 years after coming through the club's academy.

He played over 250 games and won 24 trophies, including eight Portuguese league titles and the 2003 UEFA Cup (now UEFA Europa League.)

Most notably, he was the captain of the 2004 UEFA Champions League-winning side, which shocked Europe, led by the highly revered Jose Mourinho.

Jota's widow makes first public appearance

Legit.ng reported that Diogo Jota's widow, Rute Cardoso, made her first public appearance since the death of her husband a month ago.

She attended the Portuguese Super Cup between Benfica and Sporting Lisbon, during which Jota and his brother André Silva were honoured.
