Nigeria’s D’Tigers Pay Tribute to Late Sound Sultan As They Target $100,000 From Tinubu

The Nigerian men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, have begun preparations for the 2025 FIBA Men’s AfroBasket Championship scheduled to be hosted by Angola.

Players of the squad were captured in white shirts adorned with a drawing of the late music icon, Sound Sultan, as a heartfelt tribute.

The team will also hope to emulate the success of their female counterparts, D’Tigress, who were rewarded with $100,000 each from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after they won the continental title.

They are focused on reclaiming the AfroBasket title, which they last won in 2015, in a bid to put an end to a decade of lack of a continental title.

Having Sound Sultan on their shirts has sparked reactions from fans, as he was a passionate basketball enthusiast during his lifetime.

The Mathematics "Jagbajantis" crooner, who passed away in July 2021, was the founder of the Lagos City Stars basketball club, per All Africa.

His influence on Nigerian sports and culture remains profound, inspiring the players to perform with pride.

Under the guidance of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), D’Tigers are training rigorously to face tough competition from teams like Tunisia, Senegal, and hosts Angola.

As D'Tigers continue final preparation ahead of the continental championship, fans have continued to react to footage on X. ilujogbo wrote:

Tinubu honours D'Tigress

Legit.ng earlier reported that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu rewarded each player of the D’Tigress team with $100,000 and a new apartment for winning the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
