Napoli have sent a parting message to Victor Osimhen, which reflects how their relationship ended after he sealed a permanent move to Galatasaray.

Osimhen spent last season on loan at Galatasaray, and his 37 goals and eight assists convinced the club to spend €75 million to sign him permanently.

The club posted a 50-second video, sharing some of his skills at the club with the caption, “Thank you, Victor”, on their official Instagram page.

The brevity of their message and lack of passion in the parting gestures reflected how badly things ended between the two parties, despite the striker being part of a successful period at the club.

How Osimhen’s relationship with Napoli turned sour

Napoli paid club-record €80 million to LOSC Lille to sign him in the summer of 2020, and he immediately became a fan favourite at the Maradona.

The fans were amazed that a frugal businessman in Aurelio De Laurentiis splashed such a fee on a player, making them believe he must be worth it.

He gradually won the hearts of the fans with his performances, particularly his efforts and commitment on the pitch, despite scoring 10 goals in his first season.

The Super Eagles forward improved his tally in the second season to 18 goals and in the third season, he came alive with 31 goals, as noted by Transfermarkt, helping the club win the Scudetto, their first in 33 years.

His relationship with the club began to deteriorate after expressing his desire to leave after the title-winning season, even though the club wanted him to sign a new contract.

The issues appeared to be buried when he signed a contract extension with an improved salary, and Napoli included a €130 million release clause.

He scored 17 goals in his fourth and final season. He missed a penalty in the 1-1 draw against Bologna, and the aftermath escalated the tension between the two parties.

The club's official account posted a video trolling the miss on TikTok. This was when he vowed never to play for the club again and leave at the end of the season.

Napoli frustrated his attempts to join Paris Saint-Germain and Al-Ahli as they favoured a move to Chelsea, from where they signed his replacement, Romelu Lukaku.

The proposed move to Chelsea collapsed after both sides couldn't agree on personal terms, and he joined Galatasaray on a season-long loan.
