Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo is currently under fire for being part of the Nigeria Governors Forum that donated a cash reward to the Super Falcons, following their 10th WAFCON title.

Nigeria stunned pundits, as they came back from two goals down in the first half to beat hosts Morocco 3-2 in the WAFCON final played at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on Saturday, July 26.

The victorious Super Falcons arrived in Abuja, Nigeria, to a rousing welcome at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, with ministers and governors welcoming them.

President Bola Tinubu bestowed national honours Order of the Niger, OON, on the victorious Super Falcons, and also announced allocations of three-bedroom apartments and cash prizes of N153m to each of the players, per Punch.

The national team coaches and backroom staff were also awarded NGN75 million each by the presidency for their hard work in winning Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title.

Governor Ododo hails Super Falcons

Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo has joined millions of Nigerians to celebrate the Super Falcons for their historic victory at the 2024 WAFCON.

In a post on X, Ododo said the women's team showed bravery in the face of provocation by the Moroccan fans during the final.

He praised President Bola Tinubu for supporting women in sports and empowering the younger generation through sports. Ododo wrote:

“This is more than a football victory; it is a story of grit, grace, and greatness of the Nigerian girl and woman.

Football lover in Kogi cries out

A football lover in Kogi state, Saidu Mukhtar, has drawn the attention of Governor Usman Ododo to the sorry state of the Confluence Queens FC club ahead of the 2025/26 Nigeria Women's Football League season.

Mukhtar said the Confluence team have been without a functional bus in the last six years.

He added that the players do not have access to a training pitch in the state capital, as all their matches were played at the Prince Abubakar University (PAU) in Anyigba. He said:

"What is the offense of my own team Confluence Queens that since 2018 they can not have their own reliable standard bus for the past 6 to 7 years?
"God abeg oooo, anybody wey my team offend make e forgive us na.
"It is so painful and disheartening for me to watch the team suffer lack of stable and standard mobility with all the power and resources available at the states disposal both human and material resources.
"No standard football pitch in Lokoja for the girls to play with their supports behind them cheering for them, it is very costly, they don't have a bus to move them freely to trainings nor matches too."

Confluence Queens finished in 8th place with 7 points after the end of the 2024/25 NWFL, per The Guardian.

Man criticises Tinubu

Legit.ng earlier reported that a Nigerian man, Lola Okunrin, criticised President Tinubu for his $100,000 cash prize reward to members of the Super Falcons squad after their reception in Abuja.
