Ikonne calls for overhauling of Enyimba

Beyond celebrating the national team’s success, Ikonne turned attention to pressing concerns closer to home. He expressed disappointment over the current state of Enyimba Football Club of Aba, a team that once stood tall as two-time champions of the CAF Confederation Cup but has struggled in recent years due to poor management and political interference.

According to Ikonne, Enyimba FC represents more than just football; it is a symbol of Aba’s identity and Abia State’s rich sporting legacy.

He urged the Abia State Government to act swiftly and decisively by depoliticizing the club’s administration and investing in modern facilities to restore its lost glory.

“Enyimba FC is a treasured institution that has historically united the people and boosted local pride,” he said.

“We need to move beyond partisan politics and treat the club as a professional entity capable of standing among Africa’s best once again.”

Ikonne also highlighted the broader benefits of investing in sports, pointing out that a revitalized sports sector could engage the youth, reduce crime rates, create jobs, and boost the state’s image nationally and internationally.

“As we celebrate the Super Falcons’ achievement, let’s not overlook the decline in our local sports infrastructure and institutions,” he added.
“Young talents in Abia deserve opportunities to dream big and succeed. Sports should inspire and develop, not frustrate and divide.”

He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting youth and sports development initiatives, expressing optimism that with the right leadership and vision, Enyimba FC and other sporting bodies in Abia could once again become symbols of excellence and unity.
