A former Ghanaian international football star, Awudu Issaka, has detailed how he changed his religion from being a Muslim to becoming a Christian.
He rose to prominence playing for clubs in France, Belgium, and Germany. His career began in Sunyani’s youth teams, followed by a stint with Prampram Mighty Royals FC, before his breakout at the 1995 FIFA U-17 World Championship.

This led to contracts with R.S.C. Anderlecht and AJ Auxerre, where his potential shone brightly.
Issaka's faced a tough time during his stint in Malaysia where he was arrested and imprisoned due to an overstayed visa.
What began as a promising contract signing turned into a nightmare as the footballer faced a two-year sentence in a foreign land where language barriers made things worse.
Trapped in a prison, the devout Muslim clung to his faith and prayed five times daily for solace.
He disclosed that he was introduced to a Bible verse; Exodus 14:14: "The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still", a passage which, according to him, resonated with the Sunyani Zongo native.
Despite continuing his Islamic prayers, he was attracted to Christian praise and worship sessions out of curiosity, which marked the beginning of his spiritual journey. He said in a viral Instagram video:
“I was a Muslim, yes, but I was trapped in silence. Now I will tell you why I decided to become a Christian. This is what happened. I was sentenced to prison in Malaysia. I was treated badly and unfairly. I could only speak English, but the Malaysian officials couldn’t,” he said. “It was like being trapped in silence.”
Despite his struggles, he remained steadfast in his Islamic prayers—until a divine encounter shifted his path, Ghanaweb reports.
Curiosity led him to Christian worship sessions, where he claimed to have seen a vision of Jesus Christ and heard a voice welcoming him to Christianity.
It marked a profound spiritual shift. Though he continued his Muslim prayers initially, Issaka felt drawn to Christianity before he later described his new found peace.
He added:
“I didn’t understand it at once, but I felt a peace I’d never known."
