It has been rewards galore for members of D’Tigress since the team’s return to Nigeria after winning the 2025 AfroBasket.

The team is reaping the rewards of their success as Zenith Bank is the latest corporate organisation to shower the players, coaches, and technical crew with cash rewards.

D’Tigress, led by Rema Wakama, defeated Mali 78-64 in the AfroBasket final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, to claim Nigeria’s fifth consecutive title and extend their unbeaten run in the competition to 29 games, Vanguard reports.

Nigeria has now won the tournament seven times and made history as the only team to have defended the title four consecutive times following their latest victory against Mali.

D’Tigress is presently the most dominant team in African women’s basketball and has now secured an automatic qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Berlin, Germany.

Zenith Bank splashes ₦200 million on D’Tigress

As a means to celebrate the newly crowned AfroBasket champions, Zenith Bank announced a ₦200 million cash reward for the team, the Eagles Online reports.

According to the bank’s statement, ₦10 million will be credited to each player’s Zenith Bank account, while the remaining funds will be distributed among the technical crew and support staff.

Zenith Bank, who are also the sponsors of women’s basketball in Nigeria, commended the players of D’Tigress for their hard work in retaining the title for the fifth consecutive time.

The cash reward from the commercial bank comes just 24 hours after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had rewarded the team with $100,000 each, $50,000 for the technical crew, and national honours.

The players and officials are also set to receive residential flats in Abuja as part of the presidential reward package.

Tinubu promises continued support

As preparations now shift toward the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup, President Tinubu has promised continued support for D’Tigress ahead of the major competition next year.

President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, hosted D’Tigress at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday following their return from Abidjan.

The team had faced preparation issues before the start of AfroBasket 2025 in Ivory Coast, but overcame all challenges to win the title, dismantling rivals Senegal and Mali in the process.

With their record-breaking fifth AfroBasket title and generous financial rewards from both the government and private sector, D’Tigress are cementing their reputation as one of Africa’s greatest sports dynasties.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Nigerians have continued to react to the gesture from the presidency after Tinubu honoured all members of D’Tigress with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) award.
