Alaafin Finally Opens Up on His Alleged Rift with Top Tinubu's Minister

The monarch's comment was a response to an incident during his inauguration and installation as the Alaafin of Oyo, where the minister was seen extending his hand to him for a handshake, but the new traditional ruler refused to reciprocate.

Why I did not shake Adelabu - Oba Owoade

Speaking in an interview with BBC Yoruba, the traditional ruler explained that he was not aware that the minister was extending his hands to him, adding that he still maintained a good relationship with the former governorship candidate in the state.

He recalled that he still had a phone call with Adelabu two weeks ago, to assure the public that he and the minister were on good terms. Adelabu, who was the governorship candidate of the Accord Party in the 2023 election, returned to the APC after the poll and became a minister under President Tinubu.

In the interview, the Alaafin clarified other issues bordering on his personality and his relationship with other traditional rulers in Yorubaland, particularly with the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

Alaafin gives a 48-hour ultimatum to Ooni

On Monday, August 18, a report emerged that the Alaafin had issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ooni of Ife to retract the Okanlomo of Yorubaland title he bestowed on an Ibadan business mogul, Engineer Dotun Sanusi.

The Alaafin's outburst was contained in a statement signed by his director of media and publicity, Bode Durojaiye, on Monday, August 18. In the statement, the Oyo ruler claimed that the Ooni's action was an affront and direct challenge to his authority. He maintained that the right to give title in Yorubaland

However, in the BBC interview, the Alaafin said he had no rift with the Ooni of Ife, adding that bloggers were only trying to set them against each other. However, the Oyo monarch was silent on the reported ultimatum issued to the Ooni of Ife.

Nigerians react to Alaafin's clarification

Oba Owoade dismissed the fake news as mere rumour while recalling his recent meeting with the Ooni of Ife in Lagos.
