Why Jonathan should contest the 2027 election

The former presidential aspirant admitted the fact that Jonathan has not declared the intention of contesting in the next general election, but emphasised that someone like him would be glad to see the former president join the race.

His statement reads in part:

“Those who have his contacts, those who have access to him, should speak to him. They should point out the other rumours around in 2023 that he was going to run and all that."

There has been speculation and calls on the former president to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and become the party's presidential candidate in the 2027 election. The call was renewed following the resignation of Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president, from the party.

The PDP is embroiled in fresh internal divisions as its leaders remain divided over whether to field former President Jonathan, former Anambra state governor Peter Obi, or Oyo state governor Seyi Makinde as its presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.

PDP leaders gunning for Obi, Jonathan, Makinde

According to Daily Trust, multiple party sources disclosed that some leaders, allegedly aligned with Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), are pushing for Obi, while another bloc is rooting for Jonathan, arguing that he is the only figure within the party capable of giving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu a serious challenge in 2027. A third group has also thrown Makinde’s name into the mix.

Amid the rift, the party inaugurated a 110-member organising committee, ahead of its 2025 elective national convention, chaired by Adamawa state governor Ahmadu Fintiri, with Osun state governor Ademola Adeleke as deputy chairman.

Party insiders say the composition of the committee reflects efforts to balance interests amid intensifying debates over Jonathan, Obi and other aspirants.
