Monthly salary and allowances of Nigerian senators and house members
Each Nigerian Senator reportedly earned a total monthly package of ₦1,063,860. This figure included a basic salary of ₦168,866.70, supplemented by a series of regular allowances. These regular entitlements comprised ₦126,650 for motor vehicle fuelling and maintenance, ₦42,216.66 for a personal assistant, and another ₦126,650 for domestic staff.
Senators also received ₦50,660 for entertainment, ₦50,660 for utilities, ₦25,330 for newspapers and periodicals, ₦42,216.66 for wardrobe, and ₦8,443.33 for house maintenance. The most substantial of these was the constituency allowance, which stood at ₦422,166.66.
These allowances were reportedly paid alongside the basic salary on a monthly basis, forming the regular component of a Senator’s earnings.
Regular vs non-regular allowances explained
A key distinction in the lawmakers’ compensation package lay in the classification of allowances. Regular allowances were paid consistently with the monthly salary, while non-regular allowances were disbursed as needed or once per tenure.
Among the non-regular benefits was a furniture allowance of ₦6,079,200, paid once during a lawmaker’s tenure. Similarly, a severance gratuity of ₦6,079,200 was issued at the end of the term. Lawmakers also had access to a vehicle allowance of ₦8,105,600, though this was structured as a loan that had to be repaid before leaving office.
