Live Updates: INEC Holds Bye-Elections in Kaduna, Ogun, Others

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to conduct by-elections into vacant positions in the national and state houses of assembly in 12 states of the country. The election, according to INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, included two senatorial districts, five federal constituencies and nine state house of assembly seats.

Details that emerged showed the states where the bye-elections would be held, and they included Edo and Anambra for the senatorial district poll. Also, federal constituency elections would be held in Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun, and Oyo. In Adamawa, Anambra, Kogi, Kaduna, Kano, Niger, Taraba and Zamfara states, state house of assembly elections are held on the same day.

APC candidate loses polling unit in Oyo

The candidate of the APC in the August 16 bye-election in Ibadan North Federal Constituency, Adewale Olatunji, lost his polling unit to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Fola Oyekunle.

Out of 17 total votes cast at Unit 27, Ward 10, where Mr Olatunji voted, PDP recorded nine, APC 6, while LP received the remaining 2.

This as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alleged that there was vote buying during the bye-election.

APC releases hotlines for situation room

The ruling APC has released two phone numbers to reach out to its situation room as the party announces the monitoring of the ongoing bye-elections in 12 states across the country.

INEC official, PDP chairman arrested with cash in Ogun

Some suspected staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ogun state have been arrested by security operatives with a huge amount of money ahead of the bye-election in the state.

They were said to have been arrested along with a politician, who some people said was a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader and are accused of allegedly planning to buy votes in the election.

Voters allegedly beat PDP agent in Edo

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) agent at the Ozolua Model Primary School, Iguobazuwa East Ward, which was the headquarters of Ovia South West local government area, has been allegedly beaten and manhandled.

As of the time of writing this report, the name of the agent was yet to be ascertained, and the voters said the agent had refused to release their Permanent Voter Card.

Senator Monday Okpebholo, the governor of Edo state, has casted his vote in the ongoing bye-election for the Edo Central Senatorial District.

The governor expressed concerns about the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS)'s slow performance at his polling unit.

PDP House of Reps candidate allegedly abducted

Princess Esther Ashivelli Dawaki, the House of Representatives candidate in the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency bye-election in Kaduna, has allegedly been kidnapped along with 25 supporters on the election day.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) raised the alarm while addressing journalists at a press conference in Kaduna on Saturday, August 16. The PDP chairman in the state, Edward Percy Masha, alleged that the joint security network carried out the operation.

INEC reported that voting is in progress at Isekke Ward, Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra South Senatorial District.

PDP Agent reportedly arrested in Kaduna with N25m cash

The by-election holding in Kaduna on Saturday, August 16, has taken a different turn as the security operatives arrested a suspected vote-buyer with the cash sum of N25.9 million. It was alleged that the money was meant to compromise the electoral exercise in the state.

The suspect, who was identified as Shehu Aliyu Patangi, was reportedly arrested around 3:30am on the day of the election. Police and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) made the arrest at a popular hotel along the Turunku Road in Kaduna metropolis.
