Tambuwal: PDP Breaks Silence on Arrest of Atiku’s Strong Ally, Alleges APC Plot

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto state has condemned the arrest of Senator Aminu Tambuwal by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing it as a politically motivated move aimed at silencing opposition.

Legit.ng reported that Tambuwal, who governed Sokoto state for eight years and previously served as speaker of the House of Representatives, was detained in EFCC's custody over allegations of fraudulent cash withdrawals of a total of N189 billion.
Sources within the anti-graft agency disclosed that the action of the former government was against the Money Laundering (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022.
APC wants to silence opposition - PDP alleges
But reacting via a statement signed on Tuesday, August 12, by its publicity secretary, Hassan Sanyinnawal, the Sokoto PDP alleged that the arrest was part of a wider plan by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government to intimidate political opponents and weaken growing opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“The so-called investigation is nothing more than a fishing expedition, revived from an old phantom case that has failed to produce evidence in the past.
“It is the handiwork of political actors in Sokoto and Abuja who are desperate to smear Tambuwal’s enviable image and force him to abandon his stand against misrule,” the statement partly read.

As reported by The Punch, the party insisted that Tambuwal’s administration was marked by fiscal discipline and transparency, and accused the EFCC of selective prosecution, ignoring “genuine corruption cases” involving ruling party members.
The PDP said:
“Our trust in Tambuwal’s integrity cannot be shaken by politically motivated probes.”
Tambuwal: EFCC accused of arresting ADC leaders
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that panic swept through the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the EFCC allegedly intensified its clampdown on senior figures within the opposition coalition aiming to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
ADC national publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, confirmed that three former governors, all coalition leaders, had been invited for questioning.
“This is a clear attempt to intimidate our members and weaken our resolve. We are determined to rescue Nigeria," Abdullahi said.

EFCC: Obasanjo Library vows legal action
In another development, Legit.ng earlier reported that the management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, explained how the EFCC operatives carried out "a violent invasion" on its premises.
The management clarified a statement issued by Mr. Kayode Adeyemi, special adviser on media to ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo, on Sunday.
The hotel management demanded an apology and also threatened legal action after the EFCC confirmed it arrested internet fraudsters at the Green Legacy Hotel, located within OOPL.
