Is Jonathan the Best Candidate for 2027 Election? Buhari’s Former Aide Speaks Out
- Bashir Ahmad, ex-aide to late President Buhari, claimed unnamed political figures are pushing for Goodluck Jonathan to run in the 2027 election
- Ahmad warned that the move is driven by political convenience, not national interest, and accused planners of using the North as a “political ladder"
- Jonathan, who lost to Buhari in 2015, remains constitutionally eligible for one more term; his camp has yet to respond to the allegations
A fresh twist has emerged in Nigeria’s political scene as Bashir Ahmad, a former media aide to late President Muhammadu Buhari, raised alarm over alleged plans to bring back ex-President Goodluck Jonathan for the 2027 presidential election.
Ahmad made the claim in a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, August 4, warning that the move is driven by political convenience and not national interest.

Political elements allegedly lobbying Jonathan
According to Ahmad, unnamed political players are quietly working behind the scenes to convince Jonathan to re-enter the presidential race, Punch reported.
“From all indications, there are ongoing subtle moves by certain political elements trying to convince former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest again in 2027,” he stated.
Ahmad argued that the plan is not about what Jonathan can offer the North or Nigeria, but rather a strategy to use his potential single term as a tool to rotate power between regions.
'North being used as a political ladder'
The former presidential aide criticised the alleged plot as an insult to the North’s political maturity and expectations.
“But the troubling part is that this push is not rooted in what he would offer the North or the country at large, but merely in political convenience and power rotation. The North deserves more than being used as a political ladder,” Ahmad wrote.
Jonathan’s constitutional eligibility and political history
Goodluck Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015. He came into office following the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, having served as vice president, Vanguard reported.

Jonathan later won the 2011 election but was defeated in 2015 by the late President Buhari, losing by more than 2.5 million votes.
Under Nigeria’s constitution, Jonathan remains eligible to run for only one more term if fielded.

As of the time of this report, Jonathan has not commented on the claims, nor has any of his aides confirmed or denied the alleged plans.
The development, if true, could reshape political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections, reigniting debates around zoning, experience, and power-sharing.
2027: Analysts backs Peter Obi/El-Rufai ticket
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that a public affairs analyst, Donald Okwuosa, backed the call for a joint ticket of Peter Obi and a northern candidate ahead of the 2027 election.
Okwuosa stated that Obi and El-Rufai's joint ticket would unseat President Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
