Atiku vs Obi: Festus Keyamo Mentions 3 "Demographic" Factors

  • Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi's joint ticket in the 2027 presidential election has been described as a disastrous move for the coalition, ADC
  • Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, made the claim and explained why the coalition would lose to the APC in the next election
  • Keyamo noted that the coalition was hoping that the joint ticket would beat the eight million votes of President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election, but insisted that the numbers are not on their side

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has maintained that the factors that made Peter Obi gather enough votes in the 2023 presidential election would vanish if he decided to be running mate to former Vice President Atiku in the 2027 election.

Recall that Atiku and Obi contested the 2023 presidential election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party, but they were defeated by Bola Tinubu, now president, on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

2023 presidential election results

In the election, Tinubu defeated his opponents as he garnered 8,794,726 votes, while the former vice president got 6,984,520 votes, and Obi came third with 6,101,533 votes.

Speaking in an interview on Channels TV, the minister explained that the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which was recently adopted by the Atiku-led coalition, would have no electoral impact in the 2027 election.

According to the minister, the strategy of the coalition to bring Atiku and Obi on a joint ticket in the 2027 election to knock out the APC was unrealistic. He held the view that the ADC has nowhere to go in terms of demographics in the next cycle of elections.

How coalition challenged APC, Keyamo speaks

He maintained that the moves by the coalition and the ADC would make the ruling APC work harder, but insisted that the numbers are not on the side of the opposition movement.

Keyamo said:

“Let me tell you why it is wrong. If you make Peter Obi the deputy to Atiku… three demographic factors delivered Peter Obi in 2023, but the three will collapse."

He further explained that the demographic factors are the APC, PDP and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidates were all Muslims, while Obi of the Labour Party was the only Christian among them, which was the reason he gathered such votes in the last election.

The minister also explained that the southeast felt cheated in the last election, which was the reason Obi was massively voted for in the last election. Lastly, the third factor was the fact that most of Obi's supporters voted for him because they wanted a younger candidate.
