The APC lost the governorship to NNPP’s Abba Kabir Yusuf in 2023 after a contentious legal battle that reached the Supreme Court.

Senator Barau, a seasoned politician and current Deputy Senate President, is now seen as a strong contender who could unite the APC and challenge the NNPP in the state.

Speaking during an interview at Freedom Radio, a popular Kano-based station, Hon. Yusuf Atta disclosed that Senator Barau Jibrin will contest for Kano State governor in the 2027 elections.

He also dismissed rumours of a rift between Senator Barau and Hon. Murtala Sule Garo, a former Kano State Commissioner for Local Government.

He emphasised that the party remains united and focused on reclaiming power in the state.

“There is no feud between Senator Barau and Murtala Sule Garo. In fact, we would be pleased if Garo contests for the Kano North senatorial seat under the APC,” Atta stated.

The minister also hinted that the APC’s 2023 governorship candidate, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, may consider running for the Kano Central senatorial seat in 2027.

He, however, stressed that all eligible party members are free to contest for any position.

Atta openly endorsed Senator Barau, saying, “We are rooting for Senator Barau, and it is time he takes the mantle of leadership in Kano.”

APC chieftains defect to NNPP

Legit.ng previously reported that a major political development unfolded in Kano as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former governor and leader of the NNPP, announced that thousands of defectors from the APC had formally joined the NNPP.

Kwankwaso shared the news via his official handle on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Yesterday was a momentous occasion, as I received thousands of defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) into the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).”

The reception, held at his residence in Kano, drew attention from party members and political observers across the region.

Legit.ng also reported that NNPP has firmly stated that its 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, currently has no platform to contest against President Bola Tinubu or any other candidate in the 2027 presidential election.

This was made clear by the NNPP national chairman, Dr Agbo Major, in a statement released on Saturday, July 5.
