Peter Obi Plotting Major Coup to Unseat Tinubu, LP's Factional Leader Alleges

  • Labour Party's internal crisis deepens as a faction accuses Peter Obi and others of plotting a coup disguised as a “One Million Man March"
  • Interim Chairperson Nenadi Usman refutes the allegations, calling them a false attempt to destabilize the party and smear its leaders
  • The party raises concern over DSS harassment and demands a thorough investigation into what it describes as a politically motivated petition

Cracks within the Labour Party have widened following a contentious petition alleging that top leaders, including its 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, are involved in a plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

On Tuesday, July 29, according to Punch, Abayomi Arabambi, the factional National Publicity Secretary of the party, petitioned security agencies, accusing Obi, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero, Senator Victor Umeh, and members of the Nenadi Usman-led faction of orchestrating a coup through a planned nationwide “One Million Man March.”

Arabambi further alleged that the proposed march was merely a cover to forcibly take back the party’s former national secretariat in Utako, Abuja, which is currently under the control of the Julius Abure-led group.

LP chairman dismisses allegations

Responding to the claims, LP interim national chairman Nenadi Usman, through her Senior Special Adviser on Media, Ken Asogwa, dismissed the allegations as a “malicious and desperate frame-up” designed to blackmail opposition leaders and cause confusion within the party.

“Let it be stated unequivocally that the leadership of LP is not aware of any planned protest anywhere in Nigeria under the auspices of the party.
We have neither authorised nor sanctioned any individual or group to march on the streets in the name of reclaiming a property the party has long abandoned,” Usman stated.

She added that since the Supreme Court ruling of April 4, 2025, which affirmed her as the legitimate leader of the party, the group had officially requested enforcement action from the relevant authorities to remove “illegal occupants” from the Utako office.

Due to lack of response, she said, the faction had relocated to a new and more secure facility.

“It is, therefore, laughable and deeply suspicious for anyone to insinuate that the Labour Party intends to forcibly reclaim a building it no longer uses,” she noted.

Usman also condemned what she described as the most troubling part of the petition: its alleged attempt to tie the supposed protest to a coup plot.

“What is, however, more alarming is the fictitious and irresponsible allegation of a planned coup d’état against the Tinubu administration – a claim suspiciously lumped with this so-called One Million Man March,” she said.

According to her, such claims reflect a return to a “dark era” where political dissenters were silenced through phantom coup accusations. She called the accusations not only dangerous but a deliberate ploy to target and discredit respected figures within the party.

The statement further revealed that officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) had begun harassing members of the party based on the contents of the petition.

“We warn that this path is a slippery slope that endangers our democracy,” the party cautioned.

Urging security agencies to unearth the motive behind what she called a politically motivated smear campaign, Usman concluded by reaffirming the party’s commitment to democracy and rule of law.

Ex-Buhari minister declares war on Tinubu

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the former minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung, had declared that the 2027 general elections would not just be another electoral cycle but a full-blown confrontation between the Nigerian people and the current administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking during a recent interview on News Central, Dalung voiced strong dissatisfaction with the state of the nation, blaming the Tinubu-led government for deepening the hardship faced by ordinary citizens.
