Atiku-Obi Alliance Beats Tinubu-Shettima in Trending Online Poll

  • An online poll shows strong early support for an Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi joint ticket ahead of the 2027 elections
  • The two former rivals are reportedly aligning under the African Democratic Congress to challenge the ruling APC
  • Speculation also grows over whether President Tinubu will keep Shettima as his running mate for the next election cycle

A recent online poll has drawn significant attention after suggesting growing public support for a potential joint ticket between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Anambra governor Peter Obi ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.

The poll, launched late Monday by X user Omotayo Williams, simply asked followers: “Who will you vote for?” and offered four options: Atiku + Obi (ADC), Obi + Datti (Labour Party), Tinubu + Shettima, and Obi + any VP (PDP).

According to the data, 2,536 respondents backed the Atiku + Obi ticket, while 1,105 preferred Obi and his 2023 running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, under the Labour Party banner.

Meanwhile, the combination of Tinubu and Shettima received just 131 votes, trailing behind the option of Obi paired with an unspecified PDP vice-presidential candidate, which garnered 870 votes.

Opposition forces scrambling to unseat Tinubu

The online survey comes at a time when political realignments and coalition talks are intensifying across the country.

In an unexpected twist, both Atiku and Obi—who had run under separate parties in the 2023 elections—have reportedly teamed up under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as part of a broader opposition effort to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Online commentators suggest the collaboration between the two influential figures could significantly alter the 2027 race. Both men, having previously commanded millions of votes individually, now appear to be testing the waters for a unified front.

Beyond the opposition, there is speculation surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s potential choice of running mate. Observers are closely watching to see if he would retain Vice President Kashim Shettima for a second term, as he did in 2023, or pivot to a new partner as he did years back as Lagos governor, when he made strategic running mate changes.

While social media polls like this one are unscientific, they often serve as an early glimpse into public sentiment, particularly among digitally active young Nigerians who played a pivotal role in the last election cycle.
