  • Ex-SGF Babachir Lawal said the North will reject President Tinubu in 2027, citing hardship and failed policies that have worsened the lives of Nigerians
  • Lawal accused Tinubu of making "cosmetic" appointments, claiming they are politically motivated and aimed at setting up another Muslim-Muslim ticket

FCT, Abuja — A former secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, has declared that the northern region will not support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in the 2027 general elections.

Lawal criticised Tinubu's policies, which he said have caused more hardship for Nigerians, especially in the north.

The former SGF spoke on Trust TV’s Sunday Politics.

He stated that political leaders from the region are already working to produce a formidable alternative, Daily Trust reported.

“A government that comes and decides to throw things in the other direction and make it worse must be stopped,” Lawal said.

Tinubu's policies worsening hardship, says Lawal

According to the former SGF, President Tinubu’s administration has failed to improve citizens’ welfare.

He particularly blamed the removal of fuel subsidy and the high cost of living for worsening poverty across the country.

He said the North, which largely supported Tinubu in 2023, had become disappointed by policies that have left millions in greater suffering.

“Even governments are supposed to improve the lot of the people. The key word here is improved,” he said.

Lawal: Appointments are cosmetic and politically motivated

Lawal also dismissed recent appointments by Tinubu as “cosmetic” and politically calculated.

He claimed that the moves were attempts to cover up for deeper issues and prepare for another controversial ticket.

“I was the one who opposed the Muslim-Muslim ticket. When I see the appointment of a Christian APC chairman, I know Bola is preparing for another Muslim-Muslim ticket,” he said.

He added that the president’s appointments had done more to alienate even his Muslim supporters, Vanguard reported.

“The Muslims that voted for him, he has alienated them, he has embarrassed them, and underdeveloped them,” Lawal noted.

Northern groups align for a political alternative

Lawal confirmed that his political movement, the Northern Political Consultative Group, is working closely with other key northern organisations such as the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) to present a unified front ahead of the next elections.

“We are all complementing each other. There is no other way you can get power if you don’t align with a given political party,” he explained.

The former SGF, who is also a large-scale farmer, lamented the state of agriculture in Nigeria under the current administration.

He said that farmers were being discouraged due to poor policies and harmful import decisions.

He added:

As the 2027 general elections draw closer, Lawal’s comments add to the growing list of northern voices expressing discontent with the Tinubu administration — a sign that political alliances may shift in the coming years.

2027 election: Fayose says Tinubu will win

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that former governor of Ekiti state and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ayodele Fayose, confidently predicted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will win the 2027 presidential election.

He noted that the president needs only “little votes” from the north to secure victory, adding that he (Tinubu) already gained the support of the south.
