Donaghey, a grieving mother, had previously flown to India to identify her son's remains, providing a DNA sample to aid in the process, The Guardian reports.

A match was reportedly made, and she returned to the UK with what was believed to be Fiongal's coffin.

However, subsequent DNA tests carried out in the UK revealed that the remains in the coffin did not belong to her son.

"We don't know what poor person is in that casket. I had my doubts but to be told that was heartbreaking. This is an appalling thing to have happened," Donaghey said.

She appealed to the UK government to do everything in its power to find out what happened to Fiongal's remains "and bring Fiongal home".

The entire family's pain was deepened by the sorrowful discovery, and they sought answers and closure in the midst of their grief.
