In 1994, Linda Archerd, now 62 years old, and her then-husband created the embryo through IVF.
31 years later, the embryo was adopted by a couple who have been trying unsuccessfully to conceive for seven years.
The couple who adopted the embryo are identified as Lindsey and Tim Pierce from London, Ohio.
The baby was named Thaddeus Daniel Pierce. Speaking on the development, Lindsey Pierce told MIT Technology Review that the baby is precious.
She said:
"We had a rough birth, but we are both doing well now. He is so chill. We are in awe that we have this precious baby!"
The baby is now thought to be the oldest embryo ever born after the previous record was broken by twins born in 2022 from embryos frozen in 1992.
The new mother said they didn't go into the adoption hoping to break any record, noting that their community is fascinated by the development.
She said they did not "go into it thinking we would break any records. We just wanted a baby. twins born in 2022 from embryos frozen in 1992."
4 embryos frozen by Ms Archerd, husband
According to The Independent UK, Ms Archerd created four embryos back in 1994.
Out of the four, one became her daughter, now aged 30, and three others were left in storage since then.
She has since separated from her husband, with whom she created the embryos, yet she refused to discard them and instead, she chose to donate them.
She said, per NYP, quoting MITTR:
“I always thought it was the right thing to do."
She said the embryo is her DNA and that it is her daughter's sibling. She was yet to meet the baby, but she described it as surreal at the time of this report.
Her words:
“It’s my DNA; it came from me … and [it’s] my daughter’s sibling. It's been pretty surreal. It’s hard to even believe."
Though she is yet to meet the baby, she has seen him in a photo, and she said he looks like her daughter.
She said:
“The first thing that I noticed when Lindsey sent me his pictures is how much he looks like my daughter when she was a baby. I pulled out my baby book and compared them side by side and there is no doubt that they are siblings.”
