Air India Compensation: Amount Paid to 166 Families of Plane Crash Victims Surfaces Online

Air India has paid compensation to some families affected by the June 12 plane crash.

The Air India Flight AI17 crashed and claimed the lives of everyone on board except Viswash Ramesh, a British national who came out alive.

Now, the Indian airline has started paying interim compensation to families who lost their loved ones in the tragedy.

According to a report by India Today, Air India has paid families of 147 passengers so far.

The report by the outlet stated that families of the 19 people who died on the ground also received compensation paid to them.

A statement released by the airline noted that $28,000 (over N44 million).

"Air India stands in solidarity with the families and those affected by the AI171 accident. We continue to mourn their loss and remain fully committed to providing support during this difficult time.
"Over a month ago, Air India started releasing interim payment of Rs 25 lakh to the affected families, to help them meet their immediate financial needs. The interim payment will be adjusted against any final compensation.
"Air India has, so far, released the interim compensation to the families of 147 of the 229 deceased passengers and also the 19 who lost their lives at the accident site. In addition, the requisite documents of 52 others have been verified, to whose families the interim compensation will be released progressively."

Also, the airline said it has registered a trust to honour the memories of those who died in the incident.

It says:

"The Tata Group has also registered ‘The AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust’, dedicated to the victims of the unfortunate accident. The Trust has pledged an ex-gratia payment of Rs 1 crore in respect of each of the deceased, and support for rebuilding the B.J. Medical College Hostel infrastructure, which was damaged in the accident.
"The Trust will also provide aid and assistance for alleviation of any trauma or distress suffered by the first responders, medical and disaster relief professionals, social workers, and governmental staff who provided invaluable institutional support and service in the aftermath of the accident."

Air India plane experiences fire

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that a passenger plane belonging to Air India was said to have experienced a slight fire outbreak after landing at the airport.

The plane flew from Hong Kong to Delhi and was parked at the gate when the fire broke out, according to the airline.

The airline said all passengers and crew members disembarked safely, and the aircraft was been grounded for investigation.

Air India said it had notified the regulatory authority of the incident.

It says:

Flight AI315, operating from Hong Kong to Delhi on 22 July 2025, experienced an auxiliary power unit (APU) fire shortly after it had landed and parked at the gate. The incident occurred while passengers had begun disembarking, and the APU was automatically shut down as per system design.
"There was some damage to the aircraft, however, passengers and crew members disembarked normally, and are safe. The aircraft has been grounded for further investigations and the regulator has been duly notified."
