TICAD9: Tinubu Lauds Armed Forces' Success, Advocates More African Representation in UN

Japan - President Bola Ahmed Tinubu praised the Nigerian Armed Forces for their achievements in combating insurgency and criminal activities, underscoring his administration's dedication to tackling the underlying causes of insecurity by strengthening the government security apparatus and pursuing economic reforms.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday, August 20.
According to the statement, President Tinubu made the remarks during his intervention at the plenary session focused on Peace and Stability at the Tokyo International Conference for African Development's 9th meeting.
The president emphasised that Nigeria's key strengths lie in its inclusivity, diversity, and adherence to the rule of law. Additionally, he noted that the current drive within the Nigerian Armed Forces is a catalyst for the nation's development and stability.
Tinubu stressed the continued investments in infrastructure development, institutional reforms, and partnerships with civil society and international partners aimed at enhancing the living standards of Nigerians.
"Nigeria's brave armed forces can win any number of battles, but we do justice to their heroism only when we, as government, are courageous in tackling not just terror, but also the underlying causes," the President said.
President Tinubu advocated for cooperation and partnerships among nations that are driven by market forces, rather than relying on traditional requests for aid and assistance.
Tinubu calls for more African representation at United Nations
The president, during the occasion, urged the Japanese government to back efforts to reform United Nations bodies, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to grant African countries more representation.
"It is the view of Nigeria that Africa's quest for fair and equitable representation in the UN Security Council is a just and fair demand. Indeed, Africa deserves two seats in the Permanent Category, with all its prerogatives and privileges, including the Right of Veto.
"Africa also deserves additional seats in the non–permanent seat category of the Security Council, as encapsulated in the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration." The statement concluded

Tinubu jets out of Nigeria for two-nation trip
Legit.ng previously reported that President Tinubu will depart Abuja on Thursday, August 14, for a two-nation trip to Japan and Brazil.
A statement by Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information & strategy on August 13, 2025, stated that the president will stop over in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before proceeding to Japan.
According to the statement, in Japan, President Tinubu will attend the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in the City of Yokohama from August 20 to 22. With the theme “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa,” TICAD9 will focus on Africa’s economic transformation and improvements in the business environment and institutions through private investment and innovation. It will also promote a resilient and sustainable African society for human security, peace, and stability.
