2025 By-Election: Tinubu Sends Strong Message to Opposition Parties as APC Wins 12 Seats

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his congratulations to candidates who emerged victorious in Saturday’s by-elections conducted across 16 constituencies in 12 states of the federation.
The President, in a statement by his special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the polls as largely peaceful and hitch-free.

Tinubu praises INEC, APC contestants
President Tinubu praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its handling of the exercise, noting that the elections were mostly devoid of violence.
According to results announced by INEC, the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured victory in 12 constituencies, while the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) claimed two seats.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won in one constituency, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) secured another.
Tinubu commended the newly elected National Chairman of the APC, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, describing the outcome as a significant first achievement under his leadership. He also congratulated governors and other party leaders who contributed to the party’s success.
“Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda has shown leadership capacity and demonstrated what is achievable when popular candidates are fielded and with unity of purpose among party leaders,” the President remarked.
He thanked APC members and supporters nationwide for their confidence in the party and reiterated his commitment to delivering on the administration’s development agenda.
“To all APC faithful and the electorate, thank you for the confidence reposed in our party. Be assured that our Renewed Hope slogan is not a mere slogan. Our destination is a better, more secure and prosperous Nigeria. We shall take you there, by the Grace of God,” he said.
Tinubu addresses other parties' candidates
President Tinubu also extended his appreciation to candidates from all political parties who contested in the by-elections. He urged them to uphold sportsmanship and magnanimity in the aftermath of the contests.

He noted that fair competition and respect for democratic values remain essential for deepening Nigeria’s democratic culture.
The August 16 by-elections were held to fill vacant seats in state and federal legislative houses. Security agencies were deployed across the affected constituencies, and reports indicated that voting and collation were largely peaceful.
Defence Minister Badaru delivers polling unit
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had recorded electoral successes in two North-West states, Jigawa and Kano, following tightly contested by-elections held over the weekend.
At Polling Unit 002 of Babura Kofar Arewa Primary School in Jigawa, where the Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru Abubakar voted, the APC polled 188 votes against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which secured 164.
Badaru, a former governor of the state, cast his ballot under heavy security presence but declined to speak with reporters before leaving the venue.
