FG Lists 31 States Where Heavy Floods Will Happen in 15 Days

The federal government, through the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA), has warned of impending heavy flooding in 198 local government areas in 31 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), from Thursday, August 7, to Thursday, August 21.

This came as the Lagos state government sympathised with the people of Ikorodu following heavy flooding orchestrated by a marathon downpour on Monday, August 4. The government assured that necessary measures were in place to manage flash floods effectively, and modalities for humanitarian intervention for the affected people in the community are being worked on.

In the alert on Thursday, August 7, the NiHSA categorised the expected flood risk level into moderate, high and very high. This would be determined by the local topography and the projected intensity of the rainfall.

States that will experience flooding in 15 days

Vanguard reported that the affected states are Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Benue, Bayelsa, Bauchi, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, FCT, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa and Kaduna. Others included Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara.

According to the agency, more than 832 communities in the aforementioned states are expected to experience varying degrees of flooding within the mentioned 15 days. The statement also mentioned that over 100 major transport routes are expected to experience disruptions with a high likelihood of displacement, particularly in flood-prone areas.

Umar Mohammed, the director general of the agency, called on residents in the affected regions to remain vigilant and adhere to early warning directives. He also urged them to cooperate with the emergency response agencies.

The statement reads in part:

“This alert is issued in line with our commitment to safeguarding lives and property.”

19 states to experience flooding

Recall that the Federal Government earlier predicted a heavy rainfall that would last for a period of five days and may lead to flooding in 19 states and 76 locations in the country.

This warning was disclosed in a statement by the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre of the Federal Ministry of Environment on Tuesday, August 5, asking stakeholders and residents to immediately take precautionary measures.

The warning came amid the devastating flood that struck Gombe and Ogun state on Tuesday, August 5. The disaster also affected four other states, which were Anambra, Lagos, Delta and Plateau.

Tinubu visits Maiduguri over flood disaster

Legit.ng earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu has visited Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, to share his sympathy and condolences with the government and people of the state over the recent flood disaster.
