The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the death of a student from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, who was fatally shot during a sign-out party.

The victim, identified as Babalola Marvelous Ishola, was reportedly discovered lifeless by the roadside at approximately 5:38 p.m. on Wednesday.

The incident was disclosed by counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama via their official X handle on Thursday. According to sources cited by Makama, the discovery was made after authorities received a report of a male corpse lying unattended by the roadside.

Police respond swiftly to report of unattended corpse

Upon receiving the alert, a team of security operatives was immediately dispatched to the scene. Officers were able to identify the deceased through a search of his personal belongings. The Dean of Student Affairs at LAUTECH later confirmed that Babalola was indeed a student of the institution.

His remains have since been deposited at the morgue of the LAUTECH University Teaching Hospital for preservation.

16 arrested as police launch investigation

In response to the fatal shooting, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) Monitoring Unit launched a sting operation that led to the arrest of sixteen suspects believed to be connected to the incident.

Police authorities stated that “investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances behind the tragic killing.”

The incident has sparked widespread concern among students and residents in Ogbomoso, with calls for increased security measures during university events.

Police detain officer who allegedly shot LAUTECH student

Legit.ng earlier reported that The Oyo State Police Command announced that it has detained the officers, including the prime suspect Inspector Rasheed, alleged to have been responsible for the death of a corp member, Iyanda Damilola.

The police made the announcement as pressure mounted over the force after students took to the streets to protest and seek justice for their slain friend.
