Kano Governor Donates N5m, Land to Families of 22 Deceased Athletes

Kano state - Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf-led Kano state government has announced the donation of N5 million and a plot of land to each of the families of the 22 athletes who died in a tragic auto crash.

Legit.ng recalls that the 22 athletes died in a fatal accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

The Kano athletes won six gold, 13 silver, and 10 bronze medals before their demise in Dakatsalle town, Bebeji Local Government Area, about 50km from Kano.

As reported by Daily Trust, the deceased included athletes, coaches, a journalist, medical staff, drivers, and mechanics.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s Special Adviser on Information Strategy, Ibrahim Adam, announced the donation via his Facebook page on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

“The Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has donated a plot of land and N5 million to each of the 22 families of the deceased Kano athletes.”

Kano govt pledges money for families of late athletes

Kano state government pledged NGN1 million to each family of the 22 athletes killed in a tragic motor accident.

Deputy Governor Gwarzo described the loss as heartbreaking and vowed support for bereaved families and injured survivors.

The government will provide food, relief materials, and ensure top medical care for survivors of the tragedy.

Ogun athletes protest unpaid allowances

Legit.ng earlier reported that athletes who represented Ogun State at the National Sports Festival staged a peaceful protest at Babcock University over the non-payment of their allowances.

The host athletes blocked access, preventing other state contingents from reaching their designated sports venues.

They lamented poor treatment by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
