Akwa Ibom: Tragedy as Man Shot Dead Inside Church, Police Speak

Ukanafun, Akwa Ibom state - A 45-year-old man, Udeme Uko, in Ukanafun local government area (LGA) of Akwa Ibom state, has been allegedly shot dead.

As reported by Channels Television, Uko was found dead while sleeping with his family in a church in the area.

Akwa Ibom police take action

Providing information at the occurent, Timfon John, the police spokesperson in Akwa Ibom, disclosed that preliminary investigation revealed that the incident occurred on Tuesday, August 5, at about 12:10 a.m.

The police's mouthpiece said:

“The victim, his wife, and children were sleeping at a church in Ikot Oku Usung village when a gunshot was heard in the church.
“It was later discovered that Mr Udeme Uko has been shot on his head, suggesting either a self-murder or an attack from enemies.
“The command was alerted to the incident by concerned citizens who received the report from the victim’s wife, and on receipt of the information, a team of police officers was immediately dispatched to the scene of the crime.
“During the visit, a locally made pistol was recovered as an exhibit. The corpse of the deceased has since been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy."

While noting that the investigation was ongoing the command assured the public that all necessary resources would be deployed to ensure the perpetrators were brought to justice.

Meanwhile, a survey by the police has revealed that crime rate has drastically reduced in Akwa Ibom state in the last six months.

The feat followed intensified offensives by operatives against criminal elements in the 31 LGAs leading to the conviction of 23 culprits.

Disclosing the record to journalists recently at the state headquarters, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) John attributed the success to proactive intelligence-led policing by the commissioner of police (CP), Baba Azare.

John said there has been a "remarkable progress" in the fight against crime in Akwa Ibom state.
