How Spiro’s Electric Bikes Are Making Mobility More Affordable for Every Nigerian

Spiro, Africa’s largest electric vehicle (EV) company, is transforming the mobility landscape in Nigeria with the deployment of massive battery swap stations across the country. This initiative aims to improve access to clean mobility, reduce range anxiety, and deepen the adoption of electric motorcycles, making transport more affordable and sustainable for millions of Nigerians.

Affordable Mobility Through Innovative Pricing

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Legit.ng, Spiro’s Head of West Africa, Rahul Gaur, revealed that the company is rolling out its first phase of operations in seven key states — Lagos, Ogun, Abuja, Nasarawa, Niger, Gombe, and Taraba — as part of a strategic plan to build a robust energy network across the nation.

“Our plan is to build a very strong energy network,” said Gaur. “We are starting with these states by deploying numerous battery charging and swap stations. These stations will make it easy and convenient for riders to exchange batteries on the go, stage by stage ensuring complete network coverage. This means riders can seamlessly transition from petrol bikes to electric mobility.”

A key differentiator of Spiro’s pricing model is its State of Charge (SOC)-based billing. Unlike traditional systems, riders only pay for the portion of the battery they use. “If I have used only 60% of a battery, I will pay for 60% and not 100% at the swap station,” Gaur explained. This pay-as-you-use approach significantly reduces operating costs for riders, many of whom depend on motorcycles as their primary source of income.

Mitigating the Impact of Petrol Price Hikes

Spiro’s battery swap stations are strategically positioned and accessible via its mobile application, enabling riders to easily locate the nearest station. These stations, which operate on a cashless system using digital wallets, are designed to eliminate the challenges of high petrol costs and provide a sustainable alternative for riders.

Currently, Spiro operates over swap stations across eight African countries, has deployed 60,000 batteries, and successfully conducted over 20 million swaps. The company plans to replicate this success in Nigeria by leveraging its proven expertise in building reliable swap infrastructure.

Long-Term Benefits for Riders and the Environment

According to Gaur, Spiro’s electric motorcycles not only reduce operational costs by saving up to 40% on maintenance expenses, but they also play a crucial role in protecting the environment. “Our zero-emission bikes are contributing significantly to reducing carbon emissions, providing long-term economic and environmental benefits for riders and the nation,” he added.

Why Nigeria?

Gaur described Nigeria as “the biggest market for all industries and automobiles,” estimating that the country has 7–8 million old motorcycles currently in use. “These old bikes are highly polluting and expensive to maintain. Transforming these into electric mobility options will deliver substantial daily savings for riders and drastically reduce emissions,” he said.

Having tested success in markets such as Togo, Benin, and East Africa, Spiro is now entering Nigeria “fully prepared,” bringing valuable lessons from other regions to navigate local challenges and scale effectively.

Recognizing Nigeria’s power supply limitations, Spiro is pursuing a multi-pronged energy strategy to keep its swap stations operational. This includes direct grid connections, solar-powered stations, and the deployment of Energy Storage Systems (ESS).

“Our ESS approach gives second life to batteries that have completed their primary lifecycle in other markets. These batteries are repurposed for energy storage, powering our swap stations across Nigeria. We’ve already developed prototypes in Nigeria and are now scaling them for broader use,” Gaur shared.
