Thundery and Rainy Weather Forecast Across Nigeria: NiMet Warns of Flash Floods

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather outlook forecasting thundery and rainy conditions across the country from Monday to Wednesday, with warnings of potential flash floods in several states.
The forecast, released on Sunday in Abuja, highlighted the likelihood of moderate to heavy rainfall and urged residents to take precautionary measures.

Northern region to experience thunderstorms
NiMet projected morning thunderstorms on Monday across parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano and Katsina States. The agency stated that:
“Later in the afternoon or evening hours, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over the entire region.”
It further warned of a high possibility of flooding in Adamawa, Taraba and Bauchi States during the forecast period.
On Tuesday, morning thunderstorms were expected over Taraba, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna and Zamfara States, with continued moderate rainfall later in the day. By Wednesday, Taraba and Kaduna were forecast to receive morning thunderstorms, followed by isolated thunderstorms and moderate rains across Borno, Bauchi, Taraba, Kaduna, Gombe, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano and Adamawa States.
Central region to see light rains and cloudy skies
The central region was forecast to experience light rains on Monday morning in Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Kogi and Nasarawa States. NiMet added:
“In the afternoon or evening hours, light rains are anticipated over parts of Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, Niger, Benue and the Federal Capital Territory.”
Intermittent light rains were also predicted throughout Tuesday and Wednesday across the region, including the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau and Benue States.

Southern region faces persistent rainfall
Cloudy skies and light morning rains were forecast for Monday across Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Abia, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa States. Later in the day, light rains were expected to spread across Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Anambra, Osun, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States.
NiMet warned of a high flood risk in Oyo, Ogun, Edo and Delta States during the forecast period.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, intermittent light rains were predicted across the southern region, with flood alerts issued for Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States. Bayelsa State was particularly highlighted for flood risk on Wednesday.
NiMet issues safety advisory amid flash flood threat
NiMet urged the public to exercise caution, especially in areas prone to flash floods. The agency advised:
“Ensure warm clothing for the vulnerable persons due to low night-time temperatures and ensure that loose objects are fastened to avoid collisions.
Disconnect electrical appliances from electrical sockets, stay away from tall trees to avoid impact from falling branches and broken trees.”
The agency also called on airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports for effective flight planning and encouraged residents to stay updated via its official website: www.nimet.gov.ng.

NiMet concluded with a strong recommendation for emergency response systems to be activated in flood-prone areas and for the public to avoid driving during heavy rainfall.
