Protest Rocks Kano as Married Women Take to The Streets, Photos Go Viral
- Married women from the Kofar Mata community in Kano state took to the streets in a massive protest on Saturday, August 2, decrying the rising cases of thuggery clashes
- The protesters expressed frustration over the frequent clashes between rival thug groups, which have resulted in numerous casualties, including women and children
- The women, carrying placards and chanting slogans, called on the government to take immediate action to end the violence disrupting their peace

Kano, Kano state - Residents, and neighbouring communities have said they now live in fear, as thuggery clashes have led to the deaths of innocent children, and family members.
One of the demonstrators, Hajia Fatima Usman, narrated to Legit.ng how a 14-year-old neighbour was killed in a recent attack.

Hajia Fatima said:
“We have to protest. We can no longer sleep with our eyes closed. These thugs attack happening at any time, and our children are not safe.
“My neighbours son was playing outside just less than a month when they thugs stormed and hit him with their machetes. Today, we want the government to hear our cry and stop this madness."
Another woman, taking lead in the protest, Malama Aisha Ibrahim, recounted an incident of a visitor from Katsina state who fell victim to the violence just a day before the protest.
“Yesterday (Friday, August 1), my brother came in tears telling us that our neighbours had a visitor from Katsina, only to be caught in the middle of a thuggery clash.
“This young man was killed for no reason. We are tired of burying our loved ones. The government and our security must act now, please,” she demanded.
Meanwhile, the women vowed to remain on the streets until government officials address their concerns, with some calling for increased security presence, and stricter laws against thuggery.
While the protest was led by married women, young unmarried women also joined, expressing their fears for the future.
Amina Sani, a 19 year old student, said she now avoids going out after sunset due to the frequent clashes.
Sani told Legit.ng:
“I used to go to evening Islamic classes, but now I am a bit scared. Last week, a girl my age was injured when thugs attacked happened."
Another young woman, Zainab Mohammed, who was part of the protest called for better opportunities for youths to discourage them from joining gangs.
“I think many of these thugs are jobless , and frustrated. If the government can provide more jobs or skills training, maybe they will stop this violence, and drug abuse,” she suggested.
