Public reactions mixed as debate over cost continues

The video drew mixed reactions across social media, with some Nigerians praising the move as a cost-saving and environmentally responsible initiative, while others questioned the ₦10 billion reportedly allocated for the project.

One user wrote,

“This is a welcome development. We need more of this across all government buildings.”

Another commenter added,

“They said it’s to save money, but ₦10 billion? That’s a lot of money for solar panels.”

Presidency defends project, points to global standards

The Presidency has previously addressed public criticism over the solar project, insisting it aligns with global best practices and will yield long-term savings.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, defended the decision via his verified X account.

He stressed that the project would modernise the energy system at the State House and promote cleaner energy use.

“In case you didn’t know, the White House in Washington D.C. uses solar power,” Onanuga stated. “We are following an example already proven to be efficient and sustainable.”

White House video used as justification

To reinforce his argument, Onanuga posted a video showing solar installations at the White House, highlighting how the United States Presidency integrates renewable energy to meet part of its power needs.

The video, which has since gained traction online, was meant to assure critics that Nigeria’s presidential solar upgrade was in line with international trends.

While the government maintains the project is future-focused and environmentally beneficial, concerns persist over transparency, cost, and broader implications for national energy policy.
