List: IGP, Other Top Govt Appointees Whose Tenures Tinubu Has Extended
- President Bola Tinubu has continued with the trend of extending the tenure of some prominent appointees
- On Thursday, July 31, the president extended the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, by one year
- Adeniyi would be the third presidential senior office whose tenure would be extended by President Tinubu
There was an outcry and condemnation by the opposition leaders following his move to extend the tenure of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetoku. Egbetokun was expected to retire from service in September 2024, but he is still in office because of the tenure elongation.
On Tuesday, July 23, 2024, the House of Representatives amended the Police Act to allow the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to stay in office beyond retirement age. According to the lawmakers, the amendment followed a request from President Bola Tinubu.

House of Reps extends tenure of IGP
The lawmakers' move for the amendment followed a legal threat by a lawyer, Festus Ogun, who, on Monday, July 1, threatened legal action against the federal government should the tenure of the IGP Kayode Egbetokun be extended beyond his retirement age.
The amendment of the police act would allow the IGP to stay in office for the period stated in his appointment letter.
President Tinubu appointed Egbetokun as the IGP in June 2023 for a four-year term set to end in June 2027. By September, Egbetokun would have served only one year and three months, with two years and nine months remaining in his term, considering the current retirement age.
Following the successful extension of Egbetoku's tenure, President Tinubu has extended the tenure of two other prominent appointees in office. The appointees are listed below:
Tinubu extends tenure of immigration boss
On March 31, 2025, President Tinubu extended the tenure of Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nanna Nandap, to December 31, 2026, according to a statement issued by the spokesperson in the presidency, Bayo Onanuga.
Onanuga explained that Nandap joined the Nigerian Immigration Service on October 9, 1980. Her appointment by Tinubu became effective immediately and is expected to serve till August 31, 2025.
Tinubu extends Customs CG's tenure
The latest extension was President Tinubu extending the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, by one year. Adeniyi's tenure as Comptroller-General of Customs is due to expire on August 31, 2025.
According to Onanuga, the extension will allow Adeniyi to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete critical initiatives of this administration, including:
- The modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service;
- The implementation of the National Single Window Project; and
- The execution of Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.
