BUK Student Wins Nigeria’s First Varsity Qur’anic Recitation Contest
- Abdusamad Bello from Bayero University Kano won the maiden Nigerian Universities Qur’anic Recitation Competition

A student of Bayero University Kano (BUK), Abdusamad Bello, has emerged as the overall winner of the first-ever Nigerian Universities Qur’anic Recitation Competition (NUQREC), held this week in Kano.
Organised by BUK’s Centre for Qur’anic Studies in collaboration with the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), the maiden competition gathered 54 students from 19 universities nationwide, each demonstrating advanced skills in Qur’anic memorisation and recitation.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, BUK Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sagir Adamu-Abbas praised the initiative, describing it as a platform to nurture discipline and devotion.
“The Qur’an is not only a book of guidance but a transformative force that shapes character, revives hearts, and builds responsible citizens,” he said, while encouraging other institutions and philanthropists to invest more in Islamic education.
Director of the Centre for Qur’anic Studies, Prof. Ahmad Murtala, explained that the competition was divided into three categories — 60 Hizb, 40 Hizb, and 20 Hizb — and aimed to encourage memorisation and understanding of the Qur’an among Nigerian university students.
He expressed gratitude to the MSSN and all sponsors who supported the event, adding that future editions would expand to include more categories.
Judge lauds students' brilliance
Chief Judge Gwani Prof. Aliyu Haruna commended the high level of discipline and expertise displayed by the students, describing the recitations as a testament to their dedication.
In the 60 Hizb category, Bello clinched the top prize of ₦700,000, while Usman Ibrahim from Nasarawa State University, Keffi, took second place with ₦500,000. The third prize of ₦350,000 went to Aliyu Abdullahi-Zubair of Federal University Dustin-Ma.

For the 40 Hizb category, Usman Faruq-Yahuza from Al Qalam University secured first place with ₦500,000, followed by Faisal Usman-Abubakar from BUK who won ₦350,000, and Abubakar Sa’ad Abubakar from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, who received ₦250,000.

In the 20 Hizb category, Saifullahi Sunusi from Federal University Birnin Kebbi won ₦350,000, while Sadiq Ahmad from BUK earned ₦250,000, and Hamza Awaisu from Aliko Dangote University, Wudil, took home ₦200,000.
All other participants were awarded a consolation prize of ₦20,000 each, ensuring no student left empty-handed after a competition that both organisers and attendees hailed as a significant milestone for Islamic scholarship in Nigerian universities.
Former President Buhari apologises to Tinubu family
Earlier, Legit.ng former President Muhammadu Buhari had tendered his regrets over his inability to attend the grand finale of the Qur’anic recitation competition organized in memory of Hajiya Abibatu Mogaji Tinubu, mother of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The event, a significant Islamic gathering scheduled for Saturday, May 31, 2025, was convened by Senator Basheer Lado, CON, and expected to draw high-profile personalities from across Nigeria.
