FG says move to streamline geospatial data

As reported by Premium Times, the move was also intended to streamline the management of geospatial data and bring the office closer to the centre of national decision-making, particularly in areas related to mapping, land administration, and security.

Although specific reasons were not fully disclosed, the minister hinted that the change aligns with the Tinubu administration’s agenda of reform and modernisation, Vanguard reported.

“The decision to move OSGoF under the Presidency reflects the administration’s recognition of the strategic role geospatial intelligence plays in national development,” Idris said.

Experts believe that bringing OSGoF under the Presidency could strengthen its role in providing accurate data for planning infrastructure projects, urban development, environmental monitoring, and improving national security.

“This is a smart move. When the Surveyor-General’s office is closer to the Presidency, it means better coordination and faster decisions on vital issues like road networks, land use, and even national security. Geospatial data isn’t just about maps anymore, it’s about making informed choices that affect people’s lives.”
