The extension will enable Adeniyi to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete critical initiatives of this administration, including:
• The modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service;
• The implementation of the National Single Window Project; and
• The execution of Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.
Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information & Strategy, made this known in a statement issued via his X handle @aonanuga1956 on Thursday, July 31, 2025.
Onanuga said President Tinubu recognised Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and commitment to service.
The President is confident that this extension will further strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service in achieving its strategic mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.
Reactions as Tinubu extends tenure of Comptroller-General of Customs
@olusegini
This is wrong. There is a service. A retired officer cannot continue to use the space of his subordinates. This is very wrong for service morale.
@itsShamsudeen
This is the rubbish Buhari was doing throughout his 8 years, and BAT has continued.
Stagnating officers…why can’t he just appoint another person in that role? There’s nothing new he wants to do that the new person won’t deliver.
@SA_Cipherr
This criminal is telling us that revenue generation is a strategic mandate of the customs, how and why?
@AdaIgbo00
Bayo, this is classic Tinubu politics: keep loyal gatekeepers in place and call it continuity. We see it, even if your press release is laced with buzzwords.

Nigeria Customs reports revenue jump
Recall that late in 2024, the Nigeria Customs Service introduced a new platform to facilitate cargo clearance in the ports.
The PTML command was used for initial rollout, amid claims that cargoes would be cleared in two hours or less.
The scorecard is out now as the Command has presented its report for the first six months of 2025, showing how it affected performance.
Police react to tenure extension for IGP Egbetokun
In a similar story, Legit.ng reported that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) reacted to the rumoured tenure extension for Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said IGP Egbetokun does not need a tenure extension as his appointment letter grants him a four-year tenure.
Adejobi said IGP Egbetokun’s tenure is in full compliance with the laws governing the Nigeria Police Force.
