Awka, Anambra State - A heartbreaking incident rocked Anambra state as Mrs. Esther Chinyere Onyekesi, popularly known as Adaejiejemba, and the current Anambra State Woman Leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), lost her only son, Onyekachi Martins Onyekesi (aka Fish Magnet), to suspected assassins.

The victim, Martins Onyekesi, owns a popular eatery known as Fish Barbeque in Awka, the state capital.

According to reports, unknown gunmen invaded his residence in Awka, shot him, and took him away.

Legit.ng learnt that the assailants contacted his mother, directing her to retrieve the lifeless body of her son at Amawbia, near Awka Capital City, where the body was later found with gunshot wounds.

The development has sent shockwaves across the state and in the political circle, where the mother of the deceased, Onyekesi, is widely known.

Residents expressed outrage as they sympathised with the deceased's family, urging security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Anambra state police command is yet to issue an official statement regarding the killing as of the time of filing this report.

However, in an exclusive chat with Legit.ng correspondent, Tochukwu Ikenga, the police public relations officer for Anambra state, confirmed that the police have initiated surveillance measures to locate the individuals responsible for the murder of Onyekachi Martins.

Ikenga assured the public that the state police command is committed to apprehending those responsible for the heinous act and bringing them to justice.

He further stated that the state command is dedicated to addressing crime and ensuring the safety of Anambra people.

Similarly, Governor Charles Soludo has commiserated with the family of the deceased over the loss of their son, Martin.

In a chat with Legit.ng correspondent. The governor, through the Hon. Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, extended heartfelt condolences to the woman leader following the tragic incident.

He emphasised the commitment of the state government to ensuring the safety and security of the lives and properties of all citizens in Anambra State, while reassuring that the government is actively working to address security challenges and protect residents from such heinous acts.

"The loss is deeply felt, and the government stands in solidarity with the grieving family during this difficult time. The state government is actively working to address security challenges and protect residents from such heinous acts," the governor said.

Legit.ng gathered that the deceased, Mr. Martins, hails from the Aguata Local Government Area of the state, where Governor Soludo also hails from.

Meanwhile, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Mbachu Henry, who currently represents Awka South I constituency, where the incident took place, also condoled with the family over the development.

In a chat with Legit.ng correspondent, the lawmaker decried the rise in insecurity in the state, and urged Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo to activate the state’s security architecture, “Operation Udo Ga Chi," to proactively address the surge in violent crimes.

Gunmen kill APC chieftain in Ondo
