Plan Ahead: NiMet Issues One-Day Weather Alert, Thunderstorms to Hit Major States

According to NiMet’s weather outlook released on Wednesday, July 30, thunderstorms with light and moderate rains are expected in parts of Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Zamfara, Kebbi, Kaduna, Taraba, Bauchi, and Katsina states.

The agency noted that thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected across the entire northern region in the afternoon and evening.

Northern states

Moderate rains expected in Niger, other central states

According to the agency, residents will experience light to moderate rains are expected in parts of Niger, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the morning.

In the afternoon and evening, light to moderate rains are likely over parts of Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, Niger, Benue, and the FCT.

Cloudy skies expected in southern states

In southern states cloudy skies with chances of light to moderate rains over parts of Enugu, Ebonyi, and Cross River states will be experienced in the morning.

While in the afternoon and evening, light to moderate rains are expected in parts of Ekiti, Oyo, Ondo, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states.

NiMet issues safety advisory

The agency urged the public to take necessary precautions against strong winds, lightning, and localized flooding, especially during thunderstorms.

NIMET predicts weather likely to affect ability to see

Meanwhile, NiMet earlier forecasted hazy weather conditions across the country from January 8 to January 10, 2025.

According to NiMet's weather outlook released on Tuesday in Abuja, moderate dust haze with horizontal visibility ranging from 2km to 5km is expected during the forecast period.

NiMet urged the public to take necessary precautions due to suspended dust particles in the air.
