Tinubu Asked to Sack ‘Incompetent’ Defence Minister Badaru

  • The Arewa Action Group has criticised Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar, calling his office “technically vacant” due to rising insecurity in the North
  • The group accuses Badaru of lacking strategic leadership and reducing the ministry’s work to contracts instead of real defence policy
  • They have urged President Tinubu to urgently appoint a capable minister who can align military efforts with national security needs

The Arewa Action Group (AAG), a Kaduna-based civic coalition, has delivered a scathing critique of Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar by accusing him of failing to demonstrate leadership amid escalating insecurity in the northern region.

In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its president, Comrade Ibrahim Adamu Bature, the group argued that Badaru’s tenure has amounted to leaving the Defence Ministry “technically vacant.”

They claim he lacks the vision, coordination, and seriousness required to manage the nation’s defence strategy.

“For all practical purposes, the office of the Minister of Defence is vacant. Mr. Badaru has not shown any intellectual capacity, strategic seriousness, or political coordination required to confront the scale of insecurity Nigeria is currently facing,” Bature said.

Minister ill-equipped for Nigeria's security challenges

The group criticised Badaru’s background in procurement and state politics, suggesting it has left him ill-prepared to lead during a period of mounting violence from terrorists, bandits, and insurgents across northern states like Kaduna, Zamfara, Niger, Plateau, Sokoto, and Borno.

According to the statement, the absence of strong civilian oversight has allowed service chiefs to operate without a unified strategy, leaving communities increasingly vulnerable.

“No one is setting a clear agenda or holding anyone accountable. What we are seeing is a Ministry of Defence reduced to the execution of fencing contracts and furniture procurement,” the group alleged.

Tinubu asked to sack defense minister

Bature noted that while President Bola Tinubu has boosted military funding and pursued new regional security partnerships, these measures risk being undercut by what the group described as Badaru’s passive approach.

“President Tinubu must act now to rescue the Defence Ministry from the grip of passivity,” he urged.

The AAG stressed that Nigerians need a Defence Minister capable of setting strategic priorities, coordinating with service chiefs, engaging lawmakers, and reassuring citizens that the government is actively tackling insecurity.

“This is not a ceremonial post,” Bature stated.
“Nigerians need a Defence Minister who is present, proactive, and politically mature.”

Citing the worsening security situation and declining morale among security forces and citizens alike, the group passed a formal vote of no confidence in Badaru and urged the President to replace him with a more competent figure.

“Nigeria is at war. This is not the time for trial-and-error leadership. We call on Mr. President to put the interest of Nigerians above politics,” Bature concluded.
