Marginalisation to top conversation

Though the tone of the gathering is measured and diplomatic, insiders reveal there are undercurrents of dissatisfaction, especially regarding the North’s perceived marginalisation in federal appointments, project implementations, and resource allocations.

These issues are expected to feature prominently in private deliberations.

Foundation emphasises tradition of constructive engagement

Ahead of the event, the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation’s Director-General, Abubakar Gambo Umar, highlighted the meeting as a continuation of the North’s tradition of engaging constructively with federal administrations.

He said,

“This landmark event builds on the Foundation’s successful engagement on 17th October 2022, when presidential candidates, including then-candidate Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, presented their manifestos and made commitments towards the development of Northern Nigeria.”

Umar added,

“With President Tinubu now two years into his administration, this follow-up session aims to evaluate the progress made on those electoral promises, deepen government-citizen engagement, and promote a clearer understanding of the administration’s policies and programmes.”

He further described the review as a “critical litmus test” to measure the federal government’s responsiveness to the socio-economic and security challenges facing the North.

The two-day probe by northern elders signals the region’s commitment to holding the federal government accountable and ensuring its interests are safeguarded in the nation’s governance.
