Precedent of accident involving Katsina govs
Legit.ng recalls that in March 2023, three persons lost their lives in an auto accident involving the convoy of the then-governor of Katsina state, Aminu Masari.
The accident occurred along the road to Jikamshi, Musawa local government area (LGA) of the state.
Confirming the development, Al-Amin Isa, the director-general (DG) on new media to the governor at the time, said among the individuals who lost their lives were two police officers.
Isa said a civilian also died in the auto crash.
1,593 Nigerians killed in road crashes
Meanwhile, road traffic accidents are a serious problem in Nigeria, with high rates of fatalities and injuries.
The country faces one of the highest road traffic accident rates in the world.
At least 1,593 Nigerians lost their lives in road traffic crashes during the first quarter of 2025, according to figures released by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The data also showed a disturbing rise in both fatalities and injuries, despite a slight drop in the overall number of crashes.
In Nigeria, West Africa's most populous nation, speed violations and dangerous driving behaviours are the most common causes of road traffic accidents. Other significant factors include wrongful overtaking, tire bursts, and mechanical failures. Poor road and vehicle conditions also contribute to the high accident rate.
