Buhari’s legacy and presidency
Muhammadu Buhari, who led Nigeria both as a military ruler (1983–1985) and as a democratically elected president (2015–2023), left behind a legacy marked by discipline, controversy, and mixed outcomes.
His early military regime was defined by a strict anti-corruption stance and the infamous “War Against Indiscipline,” but also drew criticism for human rights violations and press restrictions.
As president, Buhari promised to tackle corruption, insecurity, and economic instability. While he made strides in infrastructure, completing major projects like the Second Niger Bridge and revitalising rail networks, his administration faced two recessions, rising inflation, and persistent unemployment.
His anti-corruption efforts were notable for introducing the Treasury Single Account and Whistleblower Policy, though critics argued they lacked consistency and impartiality.
Security challenges escalated under his leadership, with Boko Haram splintering into deadlier factions and widespread banditry undermining public trust.
Buhari’s presidency also drew scrutiny for perceived ethnic favouritism and authoritarian tendencies, especially during the #EndSARS protests.
Despite these challenges, Buhari was admired by many for his austere lifestyle and commitment to public service. His legacy remains complex, praised for integrity and infrastructure, yet criticised for economic missteps and deepening national divisions.
