Popular American televangelist Joel Osteen has announced the passing of his mother Dolores Osteen who is also the co-founder of Lakewood Church.

Dolores Osteen was ninety-one when she died. Four decades ago the Christian matriarch was miraculously healed from metastatic liver cancer, even though doctors gave her weeks to live in 1981.

On Wednesday, July 30, Joel Osteen posted on social media to announce his mother's passing.

According to him, Dolores, often known as "Dodie," passed away "of natural causes, peacefully at her home."

“It is with a heavy heart that Victoria and I, along with our family, announce the passing of our cherished mother and grandmother, Dolores ‘Dodie’ Osteen,” Joel wrote in the statement. “She was the beloved matriarch of Lakewood Church, an inspiration to millions of people around the world, and a faithful servant of God.”

He continued, “Known as ‘Mama Dodie’ to the entire Lakewood family, together, we celebrate her amazing life and lasting legacy.”

Dodie and her late husband John started Lakewood Church on the outskirts of Houston on Mother's Day 1959, according to the church's website.

The husband and wife hosted a weekly television show that aired in 100 countries around the world.

Dodie wrote several books, including Healed of Cancer, which is described on the church's website as:

"The story of her miraculous healing from metastatic liver cancer after being given up by doctors."

"Her genuine warmth and compassion is one reason Lakewood is called An Oasis of Love in a Troubled World," a message on the website added.

John, Dolores' husband, passed away in 1999. That same year, Chron said, their son Joel took over.

April Osteen Simons, Dolores' daughter, and her mother sat down to create a YouTube video titled "Covering Your Kids in Prayer House of Hope" three weeks ago.
