Buhari’s policies hurt Nigerian youth most - Historian
Dr. Olasupo Olakunle Thompson, a historian and political scientist, has said the harsh public criticism of former President Muhammadu Buhari stems not just from his failure on campaign promises, but from specific policies that deeply harmed Nigerians, especially the youth.
“Be that as it may, the people who are now speaking ill of him today are not even doing so because of the three cardinal points (security, economy, corruption) but based on some policies and decisions that affected millions of lives, drove many into depression and su!cide and forced migration,” he told Legit.ng.

Buhari’s death: Portable compares Tinubu’s administration to other Nigerian presidents, triggers many
He listed these to include:
“These are the Buhari administration’s handling of the EndSARS, the closure of border, the money redesigns, the re‑appointment of INEC Chair and the failure of true reforms, overseeing a judiciary captured after sacking CJN Walter Onoghen and the Fulanisation of the Supreme Court by installing Tanko Muhammad, conduct of 2023 shabby elections where the youth voice and votes did not count.”
Dr. Thompson continued:
“The caliber of Ministers, especially popular ones like Lai Mohammed who kept defending his policies despite the obvious evidences of sharp practices or contrasting figures, the failure to allow Osinbajo to perform the role of acting whenever he was absent on medical leave, the cabalised government of his nephew and uncle among others, blind support and defence for some Fulani militias who had killed so many people, arrest of Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho labelling them terrorists and the effort made to arrest them while he made no such in tackling Boko Haram and bandits, killing of Shiites...”

“This may explain why some children are openly rejoicing in the north today, and talking down on Nigerians like he was happier with his cows who were obedient and subm!ssive than Nigerians.”
Dr. Thompson emphasised the impact of Buhari’s rule on young Nigerians.
“The major highlight of today’s bashing are the ones that concerns the youth which are the EndSARS, closure of border and money redesign. The youth were the most at the receiving end of these obnoxious policies from addressing them as lazy, to human right abuses under the defunct SARS.”
He concluded with a reference to recent remarks from Buhari’s wife:
“Thus it was not a surprise that his wife said that her husband asked for their forgiveness before his death. That is to say, Buhari himself may have known that health and age may not have allowed him to do well but because of self-actualisation, he had no choice than to grab what he had age‑longed for despite knowing that he would not be in charge or would not do well as it then turned out to be.”
