Bayero University Kano (BUK) on Monday, August 18, witnessed a historic leadership transition as Professor Haruna Musa was formally installed as the 12th Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
He succeeded Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, who completed his five-year tenure as the 11th vice-chancellor.

BUK community gather for transition function
The ceremony was attended by members of the academic community and stakeholders, and it marked the beginning of a new phase in the history of BUK.
Professor Musa, an accomplished scholar in Polymer Chemistry, was appointed by the University Council on July 3, 2025.
In his inaugural address, he unveiled his vision for the university anchored on what he described as the “Quadruple I Motto” – Integrity, Inclusion, Innovation, and Impact.
He pledged to strengthen teamwork, consultation, and transparent leadership while committing to make BUK a globally competitive centre of excellence.
“Our mission is to transform BUK into a world-class institution through visionary leadership, innovative funding, and effective stakeholder engagement. I pledge to pursue this vision with commitment and to uphold the values that define our great institution,” he said.
Prof. Musa expressed gratitude to his family, colleagues, and mentors for their support throughout his academic journey.
He praised his predecessor, Professor Abbas, for his mentorship and described his leadership as inspiring. He further pledged to build on the achievements of past administrations.

Earlier in his remarks, outgoing Vice-Chancellor Professor Abbas congratulated his successor and described the transition as the product of a transparent and credible process.

He recalled that his tenure began under difficult circumstances, including the COVID-19 pandemic and prolonged industrial actions that consumed nearly two years of his administration. Despite these setbacks, he said his team delivered significant results.
He noted that BUK emerged as the top-ranked Nigerian university in terms of international visibility and placed fourth overall in the country.
He further revealed that his administration successfully implemented 98 percent of the 2020–2025 Strategic Plan, which covered areas such as academic development, research, partnerships, digital transformation, infrastructure, and financial management.
BUK-Zakara land dispute resolved
Professor Abbas also recounted the resolution of the long-standing land dispute between BUK and the Rimin Zakara community through the intervention of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. He acknowledged several individuals and institutions that supported BUK, including Hon. Abubakar Bichi, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Kano State Government, and NASENI.
Registrar Malam Haruna Aliyu described the handover as a symbolic moment and urged both staff and students to rally behind the new Vice-Chancellor.
The event ended with applause as Professor Musa formally assumed leadership, signaling a new era of innovation and inclusivity for the institution.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that a major certificate fraud scandal had been uncovered at Bayero University, Kano, where 96% of submitted A-level results for 2024 Direct Entry were fake.
JAMB identified the forgeries during routine verification and has urged institutions to independently vet all admission documents.
Several offenders have been handed over to law enforcement, as JAMB reaffirms its zero-tolerance stance on academic fraud.
