WAEC, in a statement on Wednesday, August 6, via its official page on X.com, announced the temporary shutdown of its result checker website.
“WAEC hereby informs the general public that the result checker portal @waecdirect.org is temporarily shut down due to technical issues.
“However, the Council is working assiduously to ensure that candidates are able to access their results in the next 24 hours. We apologise for any inconvenience this might have caused you,” the statement read.
The announcement fueled outrage from concerned Nigerians and candidates in the just-concluded May/June 2025 examination, as the majority of the candidates failed English or Mathematics, following a Monday, August 4 statement by WAEC stating that 38.32 per cent of the 1,969,313 candidates obtained credits and above in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
Numerous candidates and concerned citizens in Nigeria took to social media, especially X, to criticise WAEC for logistical mishaps, particularly the postponed administration of the English Language exam, which was held until late at night at many test centres on May 28.
They urged the examination body to take full responsibility for the mass failure, requesting a solution, citing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board's approach to the mass failure recorded this year.
Nigerians also questioned the transparency of the examination body, as many alleged that WAEC didn't follow its standard marking guide to grade the results.
Netizens demand actions from WAEC
Legit.ng gathered some fresh criticism of the examination body by Nigerians on X.com:
@sikimark
"It's concerning that the English exam, which was delayed at centres nationwide, is now resulting in widespread failures. If @JAMBHQ could make amends, we hope you'll take steps to rectify the situation. It was a national disgrace."
@e_okwori
"The students who were robbed and given abysmal grades in English should tag the presidency, the ministry of edu etc to have an external body revise the whole exam process. This result, even though bad players like this have made Nigerians settle for just about anything, shouldn't stand."
@ayoadekanmi
"English and Mathematics were not marked. If you are a marker for WAEC this year, and you marked English or Mathematics, please come out and tell us. I bet you will see nobody, WAEC didn't mark some scripts, they should present proofs, be transparent like JAMB."
@JayTrezy
"Just like Jamb @waecnigeria is using the future of Nigerians to Gamble, Yes I said so, if majority of the D’s E’s and F9’s awarded on english are rechecked @waecnigeria will pay dearly, papers having all A’s and B’s with English F9 is a deliberate attempt to generate more revenue."
